Save our theatres
‘The magic of theatre is that the hard work is hidden; but it takes a village to make a show. And an audience to make it matter.’ —Rachel O’Riordan, Artistic Director at the Lyric Hammersmith
The importance of saving British theatres during lockdown is not just for the employees on those theatres' payrolls. It is also for the hundreds of thousands of freelancers working in and around the performing arts. Additionally, it is for the hundreds of thousands more who come to the theatre, either as members of the audience or as participants in the many programmes so many theatres run. I strongly believe in the value of government financial support to save the arts in the UK.
My name is here on the bottom row. The photo is one I took when shooting the excellent A Doll's House last year.
